Somatic Coaching

Is Your Body Trying To Get
Your Attention?

Is anxiety draining you of your focus?

Have negative or fearful thoughts compromised your sense of control?

Do you want support in moving through your anger, grief, and emotional pain?

Do you experience tightness, numbness, or pain when under stress?

And are you ready to feel more comfortable in your own skin?

Many of my clients have engaged in transformational work through therapy and other mindfulness practices, yet they live with a lingering sense that their bodies are holding onto something. They often struggle in their daily life and relationships, and have anxious, ruminating thoughts or painful narratives from their past that keep them stuck.

If you’re consumed with thoughts such as I don’t belong, I’m not good enough, or I don’t feel seen you may find it challenging to make decisions that are in your best interest, or you may avoid situations out of a fear you will be triggered. Strong emotions probably cause you to feel overtaken or out of control, and you may wonder how you can get your needs met in a way that feels both safe and authentic.

Stress and anxiety are held in your body in ways that impair your ability to be present, open, and connected. Somatic bodywork and somatic coaching are powerful ways to learn how you create that holding and how you can release it. Through this work as you engage more with your nervous system responses, you will better understand what is perpetuating your discomfort and what it feels like to live in your body in a way that supports the changes you want to make.

Following A Trauma Or Negative Experience, Many Of Us Fall Out Of Touch With Our Authentic Selves

All of us want to feel safe, seen, and dignified. However, trauma—which is far more pervasive than we think—has a way of disrupting a healthy mind-body connection. Many of the clients I work with have survived serious, life-threatening traumas, including accidents, assaults, and abuse. I also work with clients whose traumas have been downplayed or overlooked, whether they grew up feeling a sense of neglect or abandonment by their family and community, or trapped in a cycle of generational or systemic trauma.

We Have Been Conditioned To Disengage From Our Bodies

Unfortunately, we live in a society that is obsessed with trying to think our way out of our problems. And this means we have disengaged from our bodies over time, blinding us to how emotional and psychological distress is connected to our physical bodies. Even for those who have attempted to navigate trauma and mental health issues in conventional talk therapy, a deep and meaningful somatic (or body-based) perspective is often lacking. Many of us are told simply to “relax” but never taught how.

A somatic approach focuses on how the sensations in our bodies shape our thoughts, moods, and behaviors. Tapping into the mind-body connection through coaching, a somatic framework allows us to listen to the entire body, not just our thoughts. As we learn to physiologically relax, we can naturally make room to let go of what no longer serves us — and invite in more space for self-care and self-trust.

I Am A Trained, Experienced Somatic Coach Working With Clients From All Backgrounds

Somatic coaching introduces you to how your mind and body are operating alongside one another. Through this process, you can expect to understand how old self-narratives actually live in the tissues of your body, and how you can shift those narratives to make them more empowering. Not only will you learn how to manage stress and anxiety through coaching—you will foster a sense of personal leadership in a safe space where you can explore and express yourself freely.

Somatic coaching is available to adult clients of all backgrounds and locations, as coaching is not limited by state-by-state licensing requirements. I also maintain a niche specialization coaching executives and other leaders.

What To Expect In Somatic Coaching Sessions

Somatic Coaching goes beyond the typical coaching questions centered around your goals and barriers to success. Through our work together, I guide you to become more mindful of your body, interpret the sensations you feel, and ultimately shift tightness in your body to become more relaxed and present.

Our work together begins with a conversation so that we can both become clear on how you were shaped and conditioned growing up, what is and is not working in your life, and how you want to be different. Typically in a first session, I will then guide you through a standing centering practice and then we will transition to bodywork, which is done fully clothed on a massage table.

Ongoing coaching sessions focus on deepening the conversations relevant to our work together, and often include somatic bodywork, breathwork, padwork, seated somatic practices, and standing practices to support you in becoming more embodied.

If you are curious to learn more about the history and application of my approach to bodywork, I invite you to read my Somatic Bodywork page. I also go into further depth on many somatic coaching topics in my blog. There, you will find more information about what to expect throughout our work together.

Commonly Asked Questions About Somatic Coaching

How does somatic coaching differ from somatic therapy?

Though somatic coaching and somatic therapy share many of the same concepts, coaching is more future-oriented. Whereas therapy centers around past experiences, the aim of coaching is to offer you a way of being in your body that supports the future you are moving toward. Moreover, a somatic coach can work with anyone regardless of location (therapists can only work with residents in the states where they are licensed).

I am concerned about the cost of coaching.

It has always been important for me to offer my services to all clients, regardless of their socioeconomic status. For this reason, I offer a sliding scale of $115 – 185 per 75-minute session.

How long have you been working as a somatic coach?

I’ve been in the field of somatics since 2013, and I began coaching clients in 2018. I’m a certified somatic coach through the International Coaching Federation and the Strozzi Institute—considered the gold standard of somatic coaching training programs. I have considerable experience working with a variety of people and issues.

How often should I schedule coaching sessions?

At the beginning of coaching, meeting weekly is recommended with a minimum commitment of meeting twice a month. Take-home practices will be provided to reinforce progress, and I am also available for coaching sessions via Zoom when in-person sessions are not practical.
